That’s no LAN Party…

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Oh Microsoft. Windows House Parties?! XD
Well, you get points for trying, I guess. (Part of me wants to see what these Windows 7 party favors look like, just for laughs.)

Here’s my idea of a Win7 launch party: running around House Ayarane like a headless chicken, dodging LOL BULLDOGS while slapping Windows on all the machines (because mother surely can’t be bothered to config her own machines), and building Yggdrasil (old man Iggy!), and praying that none of the machines explode afterwards.

Certainly there will be pizza involved?!

Speaking of Iggy, I forget if I’ve mentioned it here, but I’ll be waiting until October before I order the last of his parts (case, PSU and wireless-N adapter, possibly video card). Certainly there will be lots of sales as Windows 7’s release date approaches. Monies have already been set aside for Iggy’s assembly, but it’s always nice (both financially and “dude I am AWESOME”) to get stuff for cheap.

Seven Windows

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Not that I imagine that there are many Windows fans here, but Altima Network’s got all their copies of Windows 7 preordered. (The Best Buy event ends later today</a>, it’s cheaper than if you order directly from Microsoft!) Blastoise and Onyx get Pro, the rest get Home Premium– and one of the remaining 4 is a wildcard. If mother wants to slap it on Evil Stepfather’s laptop, that copy goes to her, otherwise I’ll put it on Dinah. I’m wary of how it’d work out on her because of her age (mostly I’m concerned about her graphics) but supposedly Windows 7 is far less demanding than Vista… Hm.

But most excitedly, with Windows 7 comes the construction of Yggdrasil (aka “old man Iggy”). Most of his parts I already have, it’s just aside from a power supply and maybe a beefier video card (I’ve Blastoise’s old 7600GT on standby), I just need to choose a case. I like Thermaltake, so it’s pretty much down to either the Mozart Media Lab Sx or the Bach Media Lab. Iggy’s role on the network is to take over as the media server so Blastoise can FINALLY sleep at night, but also take over as a secondary Instant Ramen machine. (Even if it means I sacrifice Blastoise’s dual monitors for Iggy’s HDTV. :P) To be a TRUE media center box, I’d need to put in a TV Tuner card… but for Iggy this isn’t really necessary because he’s sharing the TV with my DVR and I have Slingbox ANYWAY, wahaha. Hell, I think my TV has picture-in-picture, I just never fiddled with that.

though… it would be nice if Microsoft could patch in Slingbox support into the Media Center dashboard… just sayin’. :P

Also for the LJ edition: new icon, w00t :D

Is it… octave? Or something.

People who know about tweaking ffdshow filter crap, I require your expertise!

I have in my torrented video pile some things that sound a little… off. Like they’re a couple octaves too high or something (you notice it mostly in the music, but some of the voices are also affected). I figured that these were just bad torrents and looted them again, only to find the issue unchanged… and only after testing videos encoded in other codecs (e.g. DivX, etc.) were fine did I begin to suspect that there has to be some way to force a setting somewhere to make these torrents sound normal, but a lot of these settings are gibberish to me.

Yes, these videos are extracts of my disaster movie stash that was lost when my previous DVR crashed, and I realize that I should just go buy up the DVD/Blu-Rays already… which I will when my VPI rebate check gets here, but I figured that knowing how to fix stuff like this would still be useful for future reference.

I just know it’s not a hardware thing because I’m encountering this on both Blastoise and Dinah. Halp? :(

Followup to OMG PIZZA:
Holy crap, Papa Johns manages to win even more. I do not know how, but they managed to improve upon my favorite config (sausage + pepperoni) with their new event pizza, “John’s Favorite.” I imagine it has to do with the tweaks to the cheese blend that was used in this config. I hope this becomes a permanent menu item, because if it does it’ll become “Yoshi’s Favorite.” /gg

What a long trip it’s been.

*needs to make a happier “I see what you did there” icon*

Originally it was going to be “go to IHOP with mother, then get ninja’d by siblings for Best Buy raiding and slacking for rest of day” but mother slept in. What actually happened was “go to IHOP with sister, go back to other house and ninja Robert, and… wait, I know this route, this is how one gets to Fry’s! o_o;;;;”

Robert had never been to Fry’s before and only knew about it second-hand as being “Best Buy on steroids,” so when he actually went in he was all “:O”. You will be able to get a safe alternative to pure http://prohormones.co/testosterone-pills/. You should see results in less than 2 weeks.

The car ride both ways was actually the best part about the whole thing, since there was much silly even though much of it sailed over my head because I don’t watch a whole lot of “normal” prime-time TV. :P

So, uh, now I have a LG-series Blu-Ray drive and a 1TB drive. Must obtain case, PSU and OS and then I’m good…

Chocolate chip pancakes = ohgod so freaking tasty just as they were 12 years ago.
And yes this post took 6 hours to write since I kept falling asleep. :P

The Yoshi Cobbler

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

As a byproduct of Yoshi Day, I’ll have ALMOST enough parts to cobble together another desktop. Yeah, this has happened before (I did, after all, assemble Reuben out of leftover parts), but the difference this time is that this machine will be miiiiine. >:D

Seriously, though… I’ve built all these machines, and this will only be the second one that’s for my own use. I’m not like mother and want a bazillion of them, but, you know, it’d be neat to slap one on my HDTV. Torrents and Painter on a big display? Yes please. I’m reusing my old GeForce 7600GT from Blastoise’s initial Erdekaiser build, so games will also be playable if I so wish it… though in those cases Blastoise is probably miles better. (Put another way, useful for those rare instances in which Robert actually comes over here and wants to play WoW; he can run on Blastoise and I’d run from this yet-to-be-named box.)

All I gotta do is front a case, a PSU (I have my old 430w but I’d rather get a modular variant) and an OS and I’m good to go. :D Since this is basically a Media Center-grade machine, may as well slap Vista Ultimate on it, too.

Apparently Wednesday = not only delicious chocolate caek, but chocolate silk pie, too.
