White Turkeys

Hurr durr Thanksgiving. Thankfully (hah!) there was no drama. Actually, it may have been kind of awesome. Aside from food, things usually entail a movie or two– in this case, Robert brought in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. In some bizarre way it was like watching a mashup of Napoleon Dynamite and NSFW (my favorite podcast ever), the latter probably because of all the Zelda sound effects scattered through. XD

After that mother wanted Eat, Pray, Love. Bah. Screw that noise, bro and I talked WoW instead. It turned into some bizarre form of 20 questions about his characters, hee hee hee. Some gems from the chatter:
Akaycia really is a (intentional misspelling and) reference to the tree (this one had been bothering me for months and ranks all time 2nd place to the origin of Numair’s name)
– Bro is stupidly amused by the very existence of Dinalesca, of all my characters. “How the hell do you get from a robot ninja girl to a Night Elf Rogue Engineer?!” or something. (fyi, Robert does not know that Dinah’s RL body is now a MacBook.)
– Bro’s plot to roll a Draenei Pally (Edira) to grandfather in the horse mount was for naught. It got changed into an elekk anyway. Sad bro is sad. :(
– “For the Horde!” rolls off the tongue much better than “For the Alliance.”
– The “Lich King liek HUEG SAMMICH” meme? It’s spreading. XD
– We also really hate that you cannot have spaces (and therefore surnames) in character names.
– I, uh, think I’ve permanently tainted bro into associating Kael’thas with naked Raiden (same VA). Why is it that whenever I mention Raiden, everyone defaults to THAT part of MGS2? XD;
– Robert is like me in that we would probably be competent RPers if we weren’t such damned control freaks… so instead we just go nuts writing the background and such instead. I had never really thought him to be the sort but he actually puts quite a bit of effort into researching names and whatnot. Once more I have invited him to throw his hat into the wiki (since he’s technically Across)

Semi-related: I have been spared from having to call in mother for transportation to the doctor’s office. The last thing I need is to have my blood pressure artificially jacked up because of her being a drama monster in the car and making me late again. Robert is stepping in for this (and if I interpret correctly, he also volunteered for the DMV stuff too, awesome). Don’t need to invent a cover story, really… ’cause chances are, mother would still be asleep by the time I go. XD

White Ninja, Day 3:

It’s been said that nobody writes viruses for the Mac because it’s more worthwhile to go after Windows machines, therefore there is no need to slap antivirus on Dinah. Yet, there’s another camp that says it would still be prudent to give her an AV program anyway. Do I, or not? That is ze question. :P

Dinah talking to Blastoise and Yggdrasil is pretty easy if she’s in the same LAN. It’s when she wanders away that things start breaking… or do they? In theory, doing a “connect to server” via their Hamachi IPs should work.

Dinah is now fully Skype-functional. (If you are packing an iPhone 4 or the newest iteration of the iPod Touch, Dinah is also capable of Facetime!) I’ll put my details in a locked post shortly, but you’ll now be able to bark at me… perhaps even on video GASP.

One Facerub Too Many

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Awesome kitty Kestine likes to rub his face on freaking EVERYTHING. Doorways, table legs, MY legs, box corners, and ninja laptop Dinah’s wifi parts.

In the case of the wireless-N card, it was just one facerub too many, because the fat purple end of the card snapped off and the card shut down. Thankfully Dinah didn’t freak and go all Blue Screen of Death, but her wireless-N card is now officially dead.

Oops.
I don’t blame Kestine enirely, though… old card is quite old (I think I got it a few months after I originally got Dinah) and it was starting to flake out. I’ve ordered a D-Link* Wireless-N card off Amazon (yay having enough rewards points to slash off half the price!) and also a Logitech lapdesk (combo cooler fan/speakers) because ninja laptop has been running VERY hot as of late.

For now I’ve fallen back on using the original onboard wireless-G… and remembered WHY I boosted Dinah to N in the first place. Wireless-G sucks! :P Actually, wireless sucks as a whole– mind you, this is coming from someone who loots podcasts left and right and at any given time is either running YouTube, Slingbox, Netflix, South Park or the TWiT Live stream– and I moved as much as my crap as I could over to wired mode earlier this year. Wireless-N is the closest to wired mode as I can get, and is the only form of wifi I’ll stick on a machine on this network ’cause I’m spoiled on my awesome gigabit ethernet that I use to pass things around inside the house network.

As for Kestine… well, he’s a bit frustrated that he can’t rub his face on Dinah for now. XD It’s funny that he goes specifically for her wifi stuff– the card and the corners of her monitor lid, which are supposedly where the wifi receiver bits are. I wonder if they emit some low-level EM wave that cats find interesting enough to facerub?

* = old router and wireless-N card were Linksys (obtained at the same time), new router is D-Link, which has been AWESOME thus far, so may as well go D-Link for the card too.

Bigger is still better: Pizza Wednesday, doods. The weekly tossup between Pizza Hut and Papa Johns is complicated a little more this time around; the former rolled out a new event pizza type (the Big Italy, yet another attempt at an extra large… dude, why can’t they bring back the Big New Yorker? THAT was awesome!), yet with the latter I’ve piled up enough rewards points to get a free pizza. Ordinarily free pizza would trump everything (because seriously, what’s better than free?), but when it comes to new/event rollouts, I gotta try it. It doesn’t help that I’m a wing addict. >_>;;;

Live from Azeroth: Yoshi now has as much of the t10 Mage armor (“Bloodmage’s Regalia”) as she’s going to get, and there’s nothing more I can pile up Frost emblems for… so any future emblems I’ll just convert into Primordial Saronites so I don’t need to kill my gold buying ’em up to make the ICC craftables for my alts or guildies. :P Any future gear upgrades Yoshi will have to get through ICC, most likely in 25-man mode. (That said… while inferior to the Frozen Bonespike that Yoshi’s packing now, I want Halion, Staff of Forgotten Love since its essentially the WoW version of Planet’s Burden, Yoshi’s signature weapon everywhere else).

I will slug that Lich King in his noobish, ice cream-hoarding face, yes I will. >:D

While old man Phil would be next on the gear supply chain, I need to throw in Rei stat, to unlock the craftable leather/mail pants. I’ve, uh… lots of rogues/druids/hunters/shammies in the guild who could use those things and I’ve kept them waiting for quite awhile (with Robert on break, I’m the only in-house ICC crafter-dood, after all). And, of course, Rei can use ’em too.

No Kon Do: BOOOOO. :( I liked Paranoia Agent (or, “what happens when Japan turns Law and Order into headmessy anime”) and Paprika (which I definitely need to revisit for the dub, hehehe I’m terrible). If you’ve no idea as to who this awesome dood was, do yourself a favor and watch either of the above. :O

This is Epic, so you have to roll for it.

…Dude. I think I want this game.
I hope it sells a freaking mint, too. Why? Because if it does, and if this is any indication… ohh yeah. See where I’m going? >:D

Live from Azeroth: It cannot be said enough that I love playing old man Phil. OLD MAN CAN HEAL or something. To think that about a month ago I was spooked about raid healing because I thought I would screw up and such. Hah! Now, it’s like… the more I play him, the easier it gets. It’s part-gear upgrades, part-experience and part-“no, really, you’re not going to botch it because there’s heal redundancy.”

(…though, the other day I DID solo-heal Patchwerk. I didn’t know until AFTER the boss went down that the other healer got left behind in Ironforge. *blink*)

So I’d piled up enough frost emblems from a late-night ICC 10-man to get the first piece of his tier 10 healer set and… uh…
Where’s the “Crimson” in the “Crimson Acolyte Shoulderpads?” (Click on that armory link up there to follow along.) Those shoulders (and the rest of the armor set for that matter) are most definitely not anything resembling red, they’re all fel (demon) green and in-game they have a bit of a yellow glow effect which makes ’em look like puke-green.

The Heroic Sanctified version? BLUE. WHAT.

Really? Really? Crimson is not puke-green or blue (though the Heroic Sanctified version would look badass on Phil), it is RED. Oddly enough, the normal Sanctified set is indeed red-ish. One out of three ftw, I guess? Still, costume designer dood, did you flunk out of color theory or something? Sheesh.

POKE HER FACE. Lady Gaga gets boo points on the whole (mostly because of the videos– the music itself is tolerable but the videos are so disconnected from the lyrics that the end results break my head), but this is the one exception, and only because Cartman does it SO MUCH BETTER. >:D

I need to remember to watch South Park more consistently. Yes, I can always stream it from the website (and it’s better that way since they aren’t bleeped) but… you get the idea. >_>;

Box of Fun and… oh, more WoW-tardery

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Oh hello August, where the smoo did you come from?
…crap, I forgot about the Midsummer Box of Fun. It’s something I’ve done in July for the past couple of years, just do an Amazon/Best Buy clusterfwegh of an order… mostly video games but otherwise small fun or awesome things. Maybe I spaced out this time because I’d gotten Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Pikmin and passed that off as my Box of Fun.
On the flipside, I can’t really think of anything else I’d want at the moment, so I could just delay it until fall or whatever. Hm.

Live from Azeroth: So, uh, I may have invaded Khadgar server… and am making a serious attempt to play a Horde character this time rather than just bumming about when there’s slim pickings for PuG raids or other things on Draenor. (Boss is out for the weekend to attend a wedding, to name one…) I’d earlier said I was going to roll a Tauren Paladin in Cataclysm, but decided to wander over to Khadgar sooner.

This also means there are two of Koyoshial now… a shadow priest on Tanaris server (Pigeon land!) though she’s kind of a token presence there… and this Koyoshial I rolled on DM’s server, who is intended to be a Blood Elf replica of Yoshi (with things like profession changed up a little bit to be more efficient). As you can guess, the Ko- prefix is my corruption of “Kopii” because you can’t put spaces in names. Boo.
Anyway, I’ll be levelling her during the day, and holy smoo you doods in Lazy Peons spoil me. :O

Ah, so different to be in a bigger guild as opposed to tiny, tiny Shattered Knights. Not that one is necessarily better than the other, and surely SK will pick up at the expansion and our doods come back from hiatus… Still, at least with this one I won’t have to wade through awful Trade chat to find a PuG raid that may or may not be made of colossal fail.

And now, time for sleep.

(WoW) Raid Heal-phobia, GTFO

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Normally in the Warcrafts I’m just a DPS junkie; Yoshi, Leslie and Rei bring the damage and big yellow numbers float away. To quote FFX2!Rikku in Warrior mode, “I cut things and we win? I can handle that.”

This is old man Phil, and he is a badass. And then there is old man Phil, the old man of awesomesauce. (Previously in MMO-land, Kopii Yoshi filled the healer role, and still does, but she does so now in the capacity of a villain.) Much like his CoH incarnation, he’s all about the heals and the buffing… and how he is NOT some indicator that I have daddy issues (I don’t, he just makes up for how I really don’t have as-recent-as-possible pictures of father readily available… or at all, actually). I struggled with healing at first– I’d run out of mana stupidly fast, and I didn’t have an efficient rotation. Several months of heroic 5-mans, the installation of Healbot and prodding from boss and Robert later and I’ve mostly been able to resolve the “running out of mana mid-fight” part with gear and mp5 gems, and I am actually kind of awesome at healing 5-man dungeons. Yay!

Recently it became time to fling everyone into raids because I was at the limit of what I could get with Triumph emblems and boss drops, and the intake of Frost emblems via the Random Dungeon was too slow by itself. Yoshi, Leslie and Rei haven’t had issues getting into ICC and other raids, but Phil… er…

…first off, let’s just say that the disaster that was healing 10-man Trial of the Crusader NEVER HAPPENED, and anyone who says otherwise is clearly mistaken. (Though, in my defense and in hindsight, it failed not only because I sucked and was sliiiiightly undergeared for it, but also because the raid leader thought it would be a good idea to make me solo-heal it because he couldn’t be arsed to find a second healer yet wasted, like, 20 minutes finding a shammy ’cause he wanted heroism. Boo this man.)

Nonetheless, after that, I kinda developed this stupidly irrational and COMPLETELY unfounded phobia of raid healing. I was convinced that if I ever threw Phil into a raid as a healer that I would suck horribly and cause wipefest-palooza and totally ruin 9 people’s day. Never mind that I have roughly an 85% success rate in the hardest 5-man dungeon (Halls of Reflection) and that if I sucked as badly as I thought I do, ALL my attempts to heal would crash and burn, or that boss, Robert, Maddy and other guildies have taken notice of my not-fail… nope, surely I would fail horribly if I joined a raid as a healer. >_>

Put another way, the thought of raid healing gave me the same “oh shit I can’t do this” feeling as the first time I drove a car (specifically, the moment that laid bare the fact that I had grown up on Mario Kart, and that everything I thought I knew about driving was the OPPOSITE of what it actually entailed).

How did I pile up additional Frost emblems, if I could not raid as a healer? I cheated by going into the weekly raids and VoA runs in Shadow Priest mode (but still wearing my healer gear for the mana regen, even if it meant taking a hit to my DPS). This is also when I broke heads on Vent when others realized that old man in their raid was neither old nor a man. (Reverse trap!) It worked thanks to things being too chaotic for anyone to bother inspecting my gear…

…until today… er… yesterday.

I was 4 frost emblems away from getting a healer trinket (Purified Lunar Dust), I’d already used up my weekly raid and daily random, and there weren’t any VoA teams because the Alliance didn’t have Wintergrasp. That left… 10-man ICC teams calling for DPS (and heals… and tanks… but raids ALWAYS need those). Pulling the “Shadow Priest Cardboard Box” trick would be a stretch here, ICC raid leaders are easy to catch onto those things, but dammit I wanted that trinket and if I could at least make it through two boss battles before getting caught and booted, that would be enough, right?

I threw in Phil in his Shadow Priest cardboard box. Marrowgar and Deathwhisper go down, and nobody makes a peep about Phil’s rather low DPS because things have gone rather smoothly across the board. Even the Gunship goes off without anyone batting an eye. But before the Saurfang fight, I get a tell from the main tank (and de facto raid leader since the actual one wasn’t big on actually leading): “You’re really a holy priest, aren’t you?”

Busted.

DPS and gear gave me away, but he didn’t say anything because, again, the raid had been going well otherwise. Since there was no point in making excuses, I laid it bare, that I had only healed 5-mans, that I had this ridiculous fear of botching a raid and getting added to a bunch of people’s shit lists but I needed more frost emblems to get a better heal trinket (so that if I were to raid heal and fail at it, at least it wouldn’t be because I had crap gear). Thankfully, this dood was really understanding and let me stay as is, with the caveat that I’d switch back to Holy if we lost a healer or the other two healers aren’t able to keep up.

I got tapped to do just that for Rotface/Festergut because the other two healers (a shammy and… a holy pally, I think) couldn’t heal both the tanks AND the raid effectively and the tank thought me being a third-wheel healer would be more helpful than my piddly shadow DPS. Cue the equivalent of “first time behind the wheel” gut fear. “It’s okay,” the tank-dood says. “Just raid heal your pants off. Worst thing that could happen is that we die, and we’re already saved so they can’t blame you for that.”

(hurr durr, no-pants Phil… ahem.)

Surely this would be asking for trouble, throwing me in as heals at Festergut– constant raid damage-over-time due to gas, among other things. This was going to bomb. I would run out of mana, we’d wipe…

…or not…

First off, I have never loved Healbot as much as I did before this raid since it spares me from having to individually target and cast. I went up and down the raid roster, throwing Renew/Flash Heals and bubbles, and popped Hymn of Hope and Shadowfiend when I was low on mana. Man, Robert wasn’t kidding when he said this was like whack-a-mole. o_o; Oh hey, Festergut is down, and nobody in the raid died! Cool! Rinse and repeat for Rotface. We would have gotten Putricide too, but that one WAS a disaster– not because of me, but because some smarmy huntard thought he could shake slime aggro via Feign Death and kept wiping everyone.

So while once again I leave a crumbled ICC raid without a Plagueworks completion achievement (the new “you must be this tall to ride” for the higher-tier ICC teams), I did get two armor upgrades, more Frost emblems than I needed to get my trinket, and a bucketload of rep… and one huge truth: that I in fact do not suck at raid healing, and thus I can throw Phil in as a healer for future raids… provided they are 10-mans, because 25-mans make Blastoise lag just a little bit. Tolerable if I’m going in as DPS, but I wouldn’t dare chance healing through that kind of lag. :P

Dare I say it, this is the healer version of Rydia’s “but loli haet fire” moment in FF4.

No more shadow priest cardboard box, henceforth. Old man Phil will be all up in your raids, spewing HP in your general direction. :D

Oh! You know what else is hilarious? He got “Sister’s Handshrouds.” Putting aside that they are in fact awesome, there is something very wrong-but-funny about Phil getting that to drop… namely, that if Yoshi had gotten them instead, Sister’s Handshrouds would be LAUGHABLY fitting since in my perversion of RP, Yoshi and Kiros are siblings too.

And with that, time for sleep.
