Lazy Bloggers

Okay, I am apparently all kinds of terrible at posting here. Well! That’s going to get fixed soon enough.

Hi.

What HAVE I been up to, anyway? Uhm… not a whole lot, really. Being kind of a forced shut-in has made things take a turn for the majorly-boring (and depressing, since I’m direct witness to all the parental drama). Even though I’ve regained my mobility since before I was hospitalized (and then some!), it’s been decided for me that I’m “too weak” to go out or learn to drive again, and apparently the comfort of dogs trumps my need to be able to get around the house to see my cat, of all things, so I’ve been stuck in this non-bedroom of a Birdcage. I can’t even get Blastoise moved down here because there isn’t enough room in this rathole to set him up properly, so I’ve had to use Dinah exclusively. Not having dual monitors sucks! (Dinah’s ability to output to an HDTV via HDMI doesn’t count, it’s too far away to function effectively as a second monitor.)

On the upside, I did nab a Wii U for Yoshi Day. (Wow, did THAT one pass without me even posting about it. Well, here’s why: what should have been an awesome 30th birthday got TOTALLY tainted by stupid narcissist parent drama.) Specifically, I got the Mario and Luigi bundle, the one that has New SMB U (and the Luigi DLC). Still need to loot Mario Kart 8, which I can probably afford after taking all these Gourmet Ramen commissions.

Yeah, that’s right, I’ve been painting again, primarily Gourmet Ramen stuff because, well, I really do need money! Try as mother may, getting people to believe I’m “disabled forever” is not happening and the process of getting SSI/disability approved is slower than molasses. (Though, I guess deep down, I kinda want this, because some part of me thinks that if I get disability, I’ll have “given up.” And also be “cheating” because mother wants to pass off my thyroid problems and other not-disability-worthy stuff as evidence I’m supposedly disabled, and if she gets her way I feel like I’d be taking resources away from people who are legit-disabled.) ANYWAY. Because “normal work” is a bitch to find and painting is one of the only two things I’m good at anyway– the other being PC building– I’ve been trawling Twitter and the Diamond Club community for any takers for Gourmet Ramen commissions, to some success. So far I’ve made… enough to pay up my WoW account until next year, which is a start! I need to pile up more, though, because the renewal for this site’s hosting comes up in late October.

…which leads to now.

I need to, uh, do something about the design of AP. There’s obviously some outdated widgets and side pages I need to fix up, and possibly see about a newer layout down the line. Also WOW, has this domain really been around for, what, 13-ish years? I also missed the 10-year anniversary of Instant Ramen Sketchbook (which began the day I got my first tablet, that ratty old Aiptek, bless its parts!) D’oh!

I’m no longer posting to LiveJournal, since it seems, like, nearly all of my readership from that has moved onto places like Twitter and Facebook. I’m just going to have to be more proactive about posting here directly and better integrating my social media stuff into this blog (which goes back into repairing/replacing widgets and things).

Sooo, watch this blog! Again!

Unpopular Opinion Time: Go away, ponies

Saturday, January 11th, 2014

Hi, I am still bad about writing in here, I mostly drift around Facebook and Twitter if you need a more frequent Yoshi fix.

Okay. I mused on this elsewhere but I may as well put it on the record again, here.

I don’t like MLP:FiM.

In fact, I don’t really care for the My Little Pony franchise, period. Never was into it as a kid, and this new series just… really, REALLY bothers me. Not even the presence of Gundam voice actors (plus a couple doods from the Los Angeles pool) can salvage interest. Nope. You can’t even appeal to my inner Trek nerd via Discord (aka MLP’s literal incarnation of Q, down to the same freaking actor).

It’s, just, the whole thing REEKS of creepy pedo-bait. I know I’m not being fair. But the character designs and the color choices and the overall package, and (certainly not least of all) the whole Brony fandom that’s spawned from this, all of it together has me all “no, NO, do not want, go jump in a black hole and let me never have to hear about this again.” I have a serious aversion to things that encourage or could potentially encourage child predators, other things including moeblob anime/video games (I couldn’t play Ar Tonelico 3 because of this– the three Reyvateils really looked underaged AND their powers were dependent on stripping, and while I am pretty tolerant of fan service, this was well on the side of NO).

Did I mention I got trolled by one of the nastier Bronies? The type that participate in the pornographic side of the fandom? Yeah. That’s another way to kill my interest in something. (And this isn’t the first time, either. Crazy fangirls killed any desire to EVER read Harry Potter.)

It kinda bristles me when a good chunk of my friends list is going on about MLP, especially a couple who swore on their souls they would never give in and take part in it. I would, of course, not be the sort to tell them to stop talking about it, so I just grit my teeth and scroll on past, I swear I might need to visit carmel dental assistance after all this gritting because I keep getting way to stressed out. But know this: if you want to get on my bad side in an instance, ask me to draw my OCs as ponies.

Yes, that really happened. Twitter DM. The dood who dared to make such a suggestion should be lucky that I never replied– mostly because of food distraction– because I would have gone off on ’em. Or not. I’m too damn nice. More likely I’d just fume internally for the rest of the day.

Freaking ponies.

I’ma go hug one of the cats now. Purring drops blood pressure. Yeah.

(Yoshi Suggests) Pokemon: The Origin

Monday, November 25th, 2013

First off: Who’s finally cashing in her Yoshi Day IOU? Aw yeah. And instead of Tales of Xillia (because my PS3 is upstairs and I still can’t do stairs yet), I’m getting Pokemon Y. (Rather than X, even though X has a blue-ish cover… because, dude, Y is for Yoshi, and that’s good enough for me.) And Nintendo is SMART to cater to those stubborn “Generation I or GTFO” fans like me since this time you get access to the Kanto starters very early on. No more having to engage in arcane trading and transfers to be reunited with the little buggers. I’m going to enjoy steamrolling everything with Blastoise, just like I did waaaaay back in Blue/Yellow. >:D

And yes, not that I’m expecting anyone to ask but I’ll distro friend code-ness on request.

BUT. This post is not about the mothership, but rather, this 4-part OAV that is to the original Pokemon Red/Blue like the Tales of Phantasia anime is to its respective game. That’s right, Pokemon: The Origin.

It’s basically a (very pretty) rehash of the events of the original Generation I games. And by that I mean Red/Blue, since Yellow is more in line with the original TV anime.

The reason I make the comparison to the Tales of Phantasia anime is because both do the same thing– they try to compress an RPG’s worth of plot into 4 25-minute episodes. Because of that, a LOT of things were left out, though for Pokemon it does give a very abridged summary of what happened inbetween.

Here’s where it gets interesting and potentially deal-breaking for those who were expecting the New York-based voice actors that are usually employed for Pokemon. They don’t show up here. I don’t know the details behind the decision, but this time the Los Angeles pool was tapped, which makes for some interesting results for some characters:

– Bryce Papenbrook as Red. Why am I not surprised? Dude’s been hitting stuff out of the park ever since Ar Tonelico 3 (and then Tales of Graces and Sword Art Online). He’s pretty good at the “hot-blooded but not totally boneheaded” roles these days.

– Johnny Yong Bosch as Brock. Need I say more? (Actually, yes. This one is a few years older, and ditches the “goofy horndog” personality.)

– Jamieson Price as Giovanni. AW HELL YES. Send the hate tells, fans of the TV anime, because this man just plain WINS. I mean, who else could you tap to play a dude whose day job is a Gym Leader but is really the boss of an organized crime ring? It’s not that TV Anime!Giovanni was bad– I thought his over-the-top accented mob boss voice was amusing– but this one just takes the awesomesauce to 11.

You see the other Gym Leaders but they don’t have speaking roles but their lines are “subtitled” in the style of in-game text. You even see some of that elsewhere, too. Yes, “It’s super-effective” is part of it. XD

The Pokemon themselves “speak” differently than in the TV anime; they growl and react and otherwise vocalize like… monsters. In some cases they did try to at least emulate the general sound (e.g. Charmander is still high-pitched).

I think this OAV was intended for older fans, those who perhaps played the first and/or later generations, wandered away and maybe thinking of getting back in. It’s certainly more… hardcore? compared to the light-and-funny TV anime. Watch the first match between Charmander and Squirtle, and you’ll see what I mean.

Also, for obvious reasons, BOOOOO at a certain battle in ep. 4. Oh come on. Hydro Pump should have one-shotted Charizard! really? Oh well, at least I got to see a Blastoise in here. :P</s>

If you’re a Gen I Pokemon fan itching for a nostalgia trip, give The Origin a whirl. As of this posting, you can watch all of it for free (AND no ads!) right off the Pokemon TV website.
