Shire Custodian Armor of Tedium

Saturday, March 4th, 2017

Boom.

What sorts of shenanigans have I been getting into? That.

New tank armor means new Hikaru drawing and boy was this a doozy. FFXIV has some beautiful gear, especially for tanks, but ow they are often a huge pain to draw. I will never rag on WoW over having ridiculously ornate gear again, lol.

I originally intended to do this in Painter to try out the 2017 version but my monitor’s color settings, while fine for everything else, isn’t too conducive to painting. Thus I threw back to my iPad and finished in Procreate. The video thus begins after the line art stage:

I’m not giving up on Painter though. Going to look into getting Duet Display so I can pretend to be a Cintiq.

(Instant Ramen Sketchbook) Snowscheme ’15 Part 1: Coffee Break

Post dressing for "Coffee Break"

I always drink coffee after a long day of shopping!

So art happened! I even streamed a couple sessions, though the second time I kept dropping my connection. And while it took quite awhile, I did finish it.

Also: HAPPY FLOWER CAKE.

The next one, despite what I said earlier, I may actually attempt to do entirely on the iPad Pro. I think part of my problem is that when I run into “oh this doesn’t work the way I’m used to” problems with those apps is that I’d sooner just shoot the file over to Blastoise rather than dig in my heels to find a workable solution where I am. I mean, I know in the big picture both units have to work together for a high-quality, well-polished piece, buuut… I DID get this thing so I can draw on it, you know? And I should actually try to DO that rather than just make a token scribble and then fall back on Blastoise since it’s more comfortable/less intimidating there.

Water. Lots of water. Also a Yoshi.

Water. Lots of water. Also a Yoshi.

Art post, what? Yoshi (the human version) with the basic version of Ebonchill (the Frost Mage Artifact weapon), and lots of water.

Originally, Kiros and Kestine were to appear in this as well, but I had a lot of setbacks time-wise because of repeated illness and had to drop them from the final composition. ANOTHER TIME, I suppose!

This piece is for the Legion art event on Wowhead. As of this writing the results have not been released, but there is potentially a Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Touch on the line. But there’s also 13-inch Cintiqs up for grabs as well, and even if I were to place 2nd, it still means a free copy of Legion. Because I’m on disability income, any coin I don’t have to spend is always going to be a good thing. (That said, I would be very very happy if I could get either kind of the Cintiq prizes because I’d otherwise never be able to afford them!)

This week I actually got to raid with Robert, and it was pretty effing rad! He’s already racked up 3 tier pieces and up to ilvl 691. He is also open to tagging along on the Critically Insane runs (technically alt runs for me since I’m using cow!Phil with them on a regular basis again, with Robert here and Suzi likely to return next week, Lazy Peons won’t need so much cowbell anymore. Their loss is Mr. Frailin’s gain, I suppose) to fling bonus rolls, since he still needs some pieces to fill out his gear. He’s better geared for Enhancement than Resto, of course.

Let’s hope the Peons can help me sell bro on getting a headset and talking in Vent. Right now he says he can’t be bothered, but I think once he sees how nutty we are he would want to jump in and sass off with Char. Or validate my assertion that he’s voice actor material. It’s been YEARS since I’ve heard bro break out his flawless Dr. Evil voice. Don’t make me a liar, man!

(Instant Ramen Sketchbook) Playing With Costumes: Deeum

Flynn AND Link? Oh, the crossplay!

This is more of a design experiment… color sketch-thingy than a serious painting, hence the simplified shading and such.

The artist version of “playing dress-up with dolls” is… sticking characters in alternate costumes. In this case, I took Deeum and put her in what amounts to a recolor (and slight tweak) of the armor that Flynn Scifo wears in Tales of Vesperia and, on the right, in the Blue/Zora Tunic (Ocarina of Time color scheme).

The former, while much fancier, isn’t meant to replace the Zora Tunic as Deeum’s ultimate armor (because Deeum cosplaying as Link is just too damn funny), but I guess I could pass it off as upgraded Star Dragon Council-issued gear because she gets promoted a few times. I tweaked the original armor design, primarily with a recolor to put it in line with Deeum’s usual color scheme (dark muted blues and black), replaced the bodhi blastia crystal on the chest with a gold star, and pretty much winged the sword design. Now that I think about it, that sword ended up resembling the Key of Lorelai from Tales of the Abyss. Hah!

The Zora Tunic is because the original player is a Zelda fan and it seemed more appropriate to use the blue tunic. If I had used the red one, it would use the red/light purple color scheme from A Link to the Past.

I have this (not so) awful habit of swiping existing costumes and recoloring/altering them to my liking. Obviously designing from scratch is better, but in these cases it’s more like I think it’s a fun experiment in seeing what would happen if I had X wear Y’s clothes.

EFFADOG! WOO!

from left: Scott Johnson, Brian Brushwood, Justin Robert Young, Tom Merritt

So the Painter 2015 update dropped literally in the middle of this painting, which kinda put things back a bit. What else set me back? Oh, losing two hours worth of work yesterday, when I was doing final cleanup on this thing! I am normally super-diligent about saving, but I guess I was a bit lax because I was near the end. The price of my arrogance is that not only did I have to restart from having two of the face panels painted, I missed a chance to possibly get this mentioned on the Morning Stream. D’oh!

This turned out to be more of a collection of face studies rather than a full-blown epic scene, but… Painter update. New software kinda demands I ratchet back a bit until I feel like I got a grip on things… but that didn’t take long.

With this done, I can now open back up for Gourmet Ramen commissions! I may nibble on some other things on the side, but I am at your beck and call. Click that Gourmet Ramen link there to see the details and pricing!
